The Alabama Legislature won't have but a few hours between its regular session and a special session.

The Legislature wrapped up its regular session at midnight Wednesday by passing both state budgets with only a few minutes to spare. The governor called the Legislature into a special session at 9 a.m. Thursday to design new legislative districts for use in the 2014 elections. The Legislature is required to draw new districts after each census.

Legislative leaders say they will also use the special session to consider a bill transferring $67 million in use tax revenue from public education to the state General Fund budget for non-education agencies. The transfer is one of several steps the Legislature is taking to make the new General Fund budget balance.
