Local Catholic Leaders React to Pope's Comments on Gays

By Ellis Eskew

The pope is making headlines for his comments on gays in the church.

On his plane coming back from brazil, Pope Francis told reporters,
"If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?" He also said gay clergymen should be forgiven, and their sins forgotten.

St. Bede associate priest, Father Patrick Arensberg says he agrees with the pope.

"If anything, it helps us as Catholics to get a good footing on how we are to approach some  of the more marginalized members of our church, people who struggle with homosexual lifestyle can still be Christians, they are just struggling with a sin just like all of us are struggling with," said Arensberg.

And local leaders believe the church is continuing to carry on its mission of love and hope.

Catholic church member and theology teacher Tom Riello says,  "All human beings, whether they are pre-born until the end of their life, are made in God's image and likeness and therefore because of that they bare a noble dignity. So the church always proposes to the world that message of love, the message of hope. So the pope is not articulating anything different than that."

Even though the pope says he is not embracing homosexuality,  several gay rights groups around the world have received his comments warmly.

You have really got to be kidding...How can we embrace such a lifestyle?
