There was a big surprise today for a second grader at halcyon elementary.
His father has been deployed to the Middle East and today he showed up unexpectedly at his son's school.
The students filed into the library at Halcyon Elementary.
They thought they were there for a special presentation. They just didn't know exactly who the guest speaker was going to be.
Seven year old Dawson Edenfield waved at our camera, not knowing what was about to happen.
But as soon as the students were all in place, in walked someone very familiar to him.
Dawson's father Staff Sergeant Rey Edenfield. Dawson jumped up in his father's arms for a long embrace.
"I just told him I loved him and missed him," said SSgt. Edenfield.
Dawson said he was "excited" to see him.
Edenfield had planned this surprise for a long time.
"Emotional. Tough. Exciting..... overwhelming. This is the way I wanted to do it. I wanted to surprise them. I knew from the beginning that's how I wanted to do it. So I didn't expect all the media and all that, kinda extra, which is fine. It was exactly what I wanted to do," said Edenfield.
Since he wasn't able to make it home for Thanksgiving or Christmas, Mrs. Scott's class had sent him cards while he was overseas.
The class had one last message for their hometown hero.
"Thank you for your service!!!" they yelled in unison.
