From Montgomery County -- An 11-year-old boy is recovering in a Birmingham hospital after deputies say he was robbed and shot. The suspect: a 13-year-old boy.

Silence fills the Flatwood Community. Toys lie on the side of the road, left behind as children flee the scene.

The Montgomery Sheriff's Office says Sunday afternoon, a 13-year-old boy walked up to a group of children playing on Cobb Lane, robbed an 11-year-old boy, and then shot him in the abdomen.

"I really couldn't believe it. I was really outdone," says neighbor Joy Hunter. "Especially when they said two children. Two children of our neighborhood."

Hunter lives a few doors down from the scene.

"Just before that happened, my son asked me if he could go around the street and play, " she says. "I said, 'No baby. You have to go wash the dishes first.' Seven minutes later, there were police cars everywhere."

Hunter says both children play with her child.

"It could have very well happened to my child," she says. "I don't believe it happened on purpose."

Chief Deputy Derrick Cunningham says this is the first time he's ever seen a situation quite like this.

"As a community we need to come together and find out what we need to do to prevent this from happening again," he says.

Julia Davis lives in the community and is friends with both families.

"We just are in a state of shock. Just praying for both families, because it's two families that have been affected," Davis says.

For now, the 13-year-old suspect is being kept in a juvenile detention center facing robbery and assault charges, and the 11-year-old is in stable condition.

"Both families are hurting badly," says Hunter. "One is in the hospital. One is in jail. It's not okay either way."

Cunningham says they are still looking for the gun that was used. He says it was a small caliber weapon.

Sheriff's deputies say they are still trying to find out where the 13-year-old boy got the gun.

The boy's name that was shot is Zay.I've known Zay for a long time and he wasn't bad i assure you.Last time we talked was last summer.We were in a fight and I just wanted to apologize for starting that.I'm just glad that I dont get the friend I love taken from us. #KinqTylerDeshone
