By CBS 8 News

Montgomery police have opened a new bureau aimed to responding rapidly to spikes in crime.

The Special Response Bureau will be based in the West Precinct Substation on West Fairview Avenue. However, Maj. Ron Cook says officers assigned to it will respond to crimes throughout the city.

Mayor Todd Strange says his own neighborhood, Vaughn Meadows, is among those that's fallen prey to burglaries recently.

He said he also has been hearing about break-ins in Cloverdale, Hillwood, McGehee Estates and other neighborhoods.

Montgomery Public Safety Director Chris Murphy said the Special Response Bureau will use the crime statistics collected daily by CompStat, which pinpoints where and what kind of crimes take place in the city.
