New Police Station Decreasing Response Times

The Montgomery Police Department's new station inside of the old Montgomery Mall has been open for almost three months and they say the new location allows them to tremendously decrease response time and as a result, help more people.

Southeast Montgomery now has a stronger police presence, thanks to the new station inside the old Montgomery Mall. 142 officers are now assigned to this location. Gaiei Fennoy is one of them.

"The south central sub station is approximately, I would say, is less than a mile away from both the south and the east precincts," she says.

That location is helping officers respond to incidents faster. There are always officers on the streets at all times, though roll calls are staggered.

We rode along with Chief Ron Cook, a 20 year veteran of the Montgomery Police Department into two areas that officers are often called out to, Regency Park and Carriage Hills.

"You'll see now, when these guys got in service and got on the street, they were already in their district," Cook explains.

Cook says officers respond to an array of calls and he says it's important for those calls to get answered quickly.

"Anything from domestic violence calls, burglary calls, calls for service on thefts."

When officers respond to calls, Fennoy says they're trying to build trust with community members.

"With our central location right here in the southeast precincts, it gives us the opportunity to enhance communication," she says.

"For so long, there was kind of a bar between us and the community and in the last three years, since Chief Murphy has been chief, we've established a better relationship with the public," Cook says.

And the public seems to be responding well to their new neighbors.

"They need to get involved because we had so many murders last year so I think it's a great idea," says resident Phae Owens.

"To have it right here in a very traveled area, I think it's a great idea," says Thomas Jones.
