New Year's Eve Preperations Underway

By Ellis Eskew

The stage is being set for new year's eve in downtown Montgomery as the city gets ready for the first ever 'Night of Lights.'

"We are going to have a very unique event at midnight. Most people drop something, we are going to completely rise an incredible star that we have in our capitol of dreams that replaces the 'A.' And it will do something very unique when it gets to the top," said City Event Organizer Denise Welch.

Bands "Groove Merchants" and "Creativity" will be performing on the stages.

Area restaurants and bars will be ready to serve food and drinks.

Country music artist and Montgomery native Jamey Johnson will be in concert at the Montgomery Performing Arts Center starting at 8:30.

Also ringing in the new year downtown, will be a fundraiser at Embassy Suites Hotel.

Longtime band the "Sweet Young 'uns" are gearing up to perform.

"We're gonna have a big party there and its is a fundraiser for Child Protect. Jannah Bailey does a wonderful job at Child Protect and we want to raise a lot of money for her. We're excited there is so much going on downtown and if you want to get warm, come inside and get warm with us," said Band member Ron Howard.

In Wetumpka, an asteroid will fall as the clock strikes midnight.

The events starts at 9:30 outside the old Elmore County Courthouse.

At midnight, the mock space rock will fall from a nearby hillside to the square in front of the courthouse.
