Prattville/Autauga Co. Humane Society Animals Need Homes
You would be surprised at the number of animals put to death each month at Prattville/Autauga's Humane Society.
The numbers would break your heart.
Carlos, a beautiful golden chihuahua, is full of energy and spunk. He's been here at the Prattville-Autauga Humane Society for a little over 3 weeks. Believe it or not, he was a stray- like many of the animals here.
"We take in strays, owner surrenders, just really all types. We take in anything that comes. We get in 25-30 strays, owner surrenders a day." says kennel staff manager Sandra Moon.
Although this humane society takes in all animals from the Prattville area, there is only enough space to house 85. As a result an alarming number of animals are euthanized prematurely.
"We do it Tuesdays and Thursdays. We have some dogs that have been here for a year and it's just simply because we want to try to give them that chance but we've had dogs that have been here 7 days and we've had to put them down" says Moon.
Last year 3000 animals were put down at this very location with up to 300 euthanations per month. The most common to be put down were big dogs.
"The problem with them is a lot of people, they don't have the housing to hold them" says Moon.
Although Carlos is new here, others like a Spaniel mix named Jasmine, are not. Moon is optimistic that Jasmine will not have to come to the same unlucky fate as so many of the others.
"Jasmine's been with us for about 6 months and she's - nobody's looking at her but we're going to keep her and that family will come and get her. She'll get a home."
Carlos and Jasmine may not have much time left to live if they are not adopted soon.
The Prattville-Autauga Humane Society is seeking donations to build an extra wing to house more animals. Send donations to 1009 Rueben Road Prattville, AL 36067
The Humane Society will be adopting out animals this Saturday at Spinners 31st Annual Pumpkin Patch Arts and Crafts Show from 9am to 5pm. For more information, you can contact them at 334-358-2882.
