People Sound off on Mayan "End of the World" Theory

By Ellis Eskew

If you believe the Mayan calendar rumors, time is ticking away for that deadline to the end of the world this month. But not everyone we talked to is buying in to it.

A polar switch...massive solar flares... Super volcanoes... and catastrophic events. Some believe ancient astronomers, known as the Mayans, knew exactly when the earth would end.

But Dr. Jay Wolf, pastor at First Baptist Church of Montgomery, says even though the Bible does warn of wars, earthquakes and famines, the end of the world will not have a known date.

"There is no hallmark, it will be so ordinary, so regular. Jesus compared it to a thief in the night. Obviously, a thief does not send a notification that he is coming to rob you. So with suddeness, with surprise, that is how the end will come," said Dr. Wolf.

So we asked others what they think of the so called "Mayan theory".

"I say can't nobody predict the end of the world but the Lord," said James McNeil.

"I think it's a bunch of silliness and nonsense. The world is going to keep on going no matter what anybody else says," said Chris Fly.

Stone Akin is a Native American historian who recently took a trip to Guatemala and Honduras to study the Mayan calendar. Here's his take on the modern day Mayans.

"I went down there with a total open mind, not knowing whether I was going to find they were going to tell this was the end. They point to December 22nd as the beginning of a new era," said Akin.

But we asked people if they believed the world were to end in a couple of weeks, what would they do differently?

"If I knew my life would be completed at the end of this day or end of this week, I'd keep doing what I'm doing, which is following Jesus Christ," said Dr. Wolf.

"I say I'm pretty much.. I'm good," said McNeil.

"Uhhh.. party hard," said Diamond Bowman.

Both NASA and the U.S. government have dismissed the end of the world theory.
