Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange and Montgomery Dept. of Public Safety Director Chris Murphy briefed reporters late Monday night on the search for the Auburn shooting suspect.

Tactical teams spent the evening searching the attic of a home on Ridgeside Boulevard, behind Ida Belle Young Park, just off Vaughn Road. Police believe that Auburn shooting suspect Desmonte Leonard was hiding in the attic, based on a 911 phone call and what they call other credible evidence.

Leonard is accused of shooting six people, three fatally, at a party Saturday night at the University Heights apartment complex in Auburn.

Police have made no visual or verbal contact with the person who they believe is hiding in the attic. They fired two rounds of tear gas into the home and believe they heard sounds, possibly coughing, coming from the attic.

For hours, tactical teams searched the attic inch by inch. Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange says the home is about 1,800 square feet. At one point, 16 team members were in the attic, protected by bulletproof vests and gas masks. So far, they found nothing.

Leonard is described as being 5'4" tall, which police believe allows him to hide in the two feet of insulation in the attic, or perhaps in the home's ventilation system. Late Monday night, tactical team members were going to go through the attic again in the hopes of finding him and taking him into custody safely.
