Friends of the Wetumpka freshman who was shot and killed at the University of South Alabama are shocked and questioning the shooting by a campus police officer.
Around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, University officials say 18-year old Gil Collar of Wetumpka charged the officer naked. They say he ignored repeated commands to stop, forcing the officer to fatally shoot him once in the chest.
Collar's friends say he was an outgoing high school athlete who loved wrestling at Wetumpka High School. Some don't believe the officer should have drawn his weapon on an unarmed person.
Local prosecutors are investigating the shooting. The officer involved is on paid leave, and an autopsy will determine if drugs or alcohol were involved.
Campus officials say the confrontation was recorded by security cameras.
