Gov. Bentley Backs Down From First Major Proposal

By Tiffany Lester

With the 2013 Legislative session just a few weeks away, Governor Robert Bentley already decided to back down from his first major proposal.

Bentley's goal was to reduce state payroll, and wanted to pass incentives for veteran state employees to retire.

Now the governor says the incentives aren't needed because the state is saving money in other areas, and there are enough people leaving state service.

Only more than 300 employees had expressed interest to the State Personnel Department, it's far fewer than the 2,600 who retired when the state last offered incentives in 1998.
