ASU, Silver Agree to Separation

By CBS 8 News

Alabama State University trustees have formed a mutual separation agreement with suspended university President Joseph Silver.

Silver was placed on paid administrative leave Nov. 26 after officials said he tried firing executive vice president John Knight - a state representative from Montgomery.

The terms of the separation agreement have not yet been announced. Trustees voted 8-1 to accept the agreement and one member chose not to vote.

Silver's contract allows trustees to fire him without cause - in which case the school will be responsible for paying out the remainder of his contract.

Silver's contract began Sept. 17, 2012 and was slated to end on Aug. 31, 2016. His annual salary was $325,000.

If Silver is terminated with cause, the school does not have to continue paying him.

This episode of ASU governance is nothing more than a travesty of epic proportions. I expected Dr. Silver's attorney to file a temporary restraining order (TRO) since the the board of trustees had advertised its intention to terminate Dr. Silver, and/or an 'injunction'. I am really disappointed that Governor Bentley failed to exercise the full power of his office by preventing the pilferage of public funds effectuated through a mutual separation agreement that will cost the citizens of Alabama almost two thirds of a million dollars...what a travesty!

The board needs to go! Hopefully, the students will transfer to other schools where they will have a voice.
