Saving the Alabama Music Hall of Fame

By Ellis Eskew

Alabama is known for producing world famous artists...
From "The Commodores", "Alabama" and Montgomery's own Hank Williams.

Those artists have gone down in the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, which unfortunately had to close its doors in 2011.

"Alabama" lead singer Randy Owen is livid.
He recently told the media he was upset that the institution did not get the support it needed to keep its doors open.

He blames the political leaders that voted to close it because of what he says is their hypocrisy.

And everyone else in the state for not regarding music and the arts very highly.
Instead, only caring about football.

But now Montgomery has the opportunity to bring the Alabama Music
Hall of Fame back to life in the capital city.

"We're evaluating, not as a city but as a working group, including primarily private individuals and folks from the chamber and the convention and visitors bureau. We're brainstorming on a creative way to put together a proposal for them to meet their needs," said Director of City Development Chad Emerson.

Emerson says the decision will come down to construction costs and opportunity costs.
But if the city could nab the music hall of fame, its most likely location would be downtown.

"We've talked to leadership and they are most interested in the core of downtown. We have the hotels there, you have the music venues there, so if we can find an existing building or potentially a new building in downtown Montgomery if we can make the deal pencil out could be a good fit for downtown," said Emerson.
