Stranded Travelers Keeping Montgomery Hotels Busy

By Ashley Thompson

Thousands of people are stranded in Montgomery because of the winter storm.

Bad road conditions and cancelled flights are keeping hotels full.

Everyone's got a different story about why they're stranded in Montgomery. Several active duty servicemen are staying at the Renaissance for the next two days. Martel McCray says he was headed to South Carolina when...

"This snow happened today and we did not plan on getting stuck here for two days but we're going to do it. We're going to make it happen."

Robert Simpson says he too is making the best of the situation. Simpson was headed to New Jersey this morning, then his plans fell through

"Woke up this morning and went to the Montgomery Airport over there and right off the bat, about 8 o'clock, all flights cancelled."

"It's been total chaos at the hotel this morning," says Lakresha Daniel.

Daniel manages the Hampton Inn Downtown and Angel Lindsey works the front desk. They tell us the winter storm is causing some to panic.

"We've had a lot of people that have come in and have been panicking," says Lindsey. "They can't get home to their families so you know, they're nervous so we let them know, just call your families and let them know it's going to be okay."

Daniel says it's not just out of town guests who need rooms.

"We've had some local employees from the state that couldn't get on the interstate so they've actually come in and a couple people from the hospital, local hospitals, have come in and stayed with us as well," she says.

But for the many who are trying to leave Montgomery, they may have to wait a few days.

"I didn't expect it to be this bad," says Matthew Smith, who's stuck in town from Tennessee. "Normally in the south you don't really get these bad snow storms to where roads are frozen and you have to shut things down."
