The Cost Of Coaches

By Ashley Thompson

We took a look at the salaries of 4 Alabama college football coaches and ask people if they think the coach is worth the money.

Nick Saban. You know him as Alabama's head coach. But he's also one of the highest paid college football coaches in the nation. His 2012 salary is $5,320,000.

"I believe that's absolutely 100 percent fair because I think Coach Saban is such a stud. I think he creates a lot of revenue for the college. I think people come to watch the game to see him as well, not just the players," says Saban supporter Chase Forehand.

Auburn's new coach Gus Malzahn will make 2.3 million per year over the next 5 years with a base salary of 500 thousand dollars. Malzahn's letter of agreement states that he is able to earn up to 1.5 million more through endorsements and appearances.

"He's only had one actual year of head coaching experience so to say if he's worth it or not- it's one of those questions that is for the future to determine. If he's winning then you'll say yes but if he's losing, you'll have to say was it worth it to begin with when there were more experienced head coaches," says Edward Sims.

Alabama State University's Reggie Barlow has a salary around 140k. He can get up to about 25k extra in incentives.

Troy's 22 season veteran coach Larry Blakeney rakes in around 450 thousand.

"I would say it's average for a D1 coach like that. They're coming up in the conference so maybe it's about time to pay him a little more money so they'll get a couple more wins but they almost knocked out big teams this year like Mississippi State," says Troy fan Jack Monte.

There's obviously a lot of money going around with regards to coaches in college football. Most of the people I spoke with told me they believe that salary should reflect record.  What do you think?
