The Future of Montgomery Mall Remains UnclearWe've heard future plans for the Montgomery Mall, but is any of it concrete? CBS 8 finds out if life will soon return to the abandoned lot. As Olivia Wilson walks through the desolate parking lot, she sees no signs of what used to be the popular Montgomery Mall. "It's a waste. It's pretty much a waste," said Wilson. Now it's an abandoned lot where truckers camp out, cars cut through to beat the traffic, and you may even find people fixing cars out back. "We've been working on this car for about two weeks," said Mark Anthony Mann, who was working on a car. "It looks bad. I think they should do something with it," said Jasmine Smith, who lives nearby. Despite past talks of a health clinic and even a church moving in to restore the dream, the city says there is really only one new project that's a sure thing. "The only thing that we can truly announce is that we are under bid to construct a new fire station and police facility," said Deputy Mayor, Jeff Downes. According to Downes the new fire station and police substation would be in the old Steve and Barry's section of mall. "Everything else is speculative," he said. Leasing and for sale signs still surround the property, but Downes says the center part of the mall is under contract with a company called G3 Development, but they haven't purchased it yet. CBS 8 spoke to representatives from RiversEdge Church who also say they are still quote "under contract" to purchase the Parisian side of the mall, but say things are moving along slower than expected. "The city is the only entity right now that is actively moving towards a construction project," said Downes. He hopes once that project is underway, everything else will fall into place. Exactly what the final product will be, is still up in the air. "I think something different. Maybe not a mall, but something different," said Wilson. "I'd say they should open it back up as a mall. Put a movie theater in there," said Smith. Downes says construction will begin on the new fire station and the police substation this fall. |

I think that we need a huge flea market. That would be a good spot for a huge flea market to allow venders to come and set up either on weekends or all week long. it could turn out to be one of the biggest ones if it worked out. Such a shame that things have to go out of business because people ruin it for others
