Urgent Need for Blood Donors

By Ellis Eskew

The American Red Cross is sending out an emergency appeal for blood donations. The blood supply is very low across the country and they need your help.

The summertime is usually a critical time  for blood donations. And this summer is no different. That's why Alabama News Network teamed up with Faith Radio and the American Red Cross to help save lives.

The blood donor round up blood drive kicked off at Eastdale Mall Tuesday.

"In the summertime we lose 25 percent of our donor base because that comes from high school and colleges," said Helen Carroll with the American Red Cross.

But donors did hear about the need ...And they answered the call.

"I had seen it on the news that they were giving blood. Didn't have a chance to do it when they did it at my job because I was off," said donor Essie Burke.

According to the Red Cross, the month of June had 50 thousand fewer donations than expected nationwide. While they welcome all blood types, there is a specific need for O-negative, A-negative , and B-negative blood.

Donors we talked to say they are happy to give.

"I love giving back and I love giving blood as much as possible," said Walla Harvell.

If you missed Tuesday's donor round up blood drive...  there will be a round up Thursday in Wetumpka, July 11th from 1:30 to 6:00pm at the First Baptist Church.

Or call 1-800-REDCROSS for other locations.
