Volunteers Pitch In For "Clean Campus" Project at Montgomery Co. Schools
While many people spent their Saturday morning sleeping in, these volunteers spent their time lending a helping hand at Pintlala Elementary. They're calling it the "Chamber's Clean Campus Project," where volunteers from dozens of organizations are donating their time and money to spruce up schools across Montgomery County. All to make kids' first day of school even better. "First impressions mean a lot," Said Tim Haseltine, PR Director at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama. "So on Monday morning, when the parents drop the kids off, when the kids come in the doors and they see ferns, and they see a United States that's painted, and they see pinestraw, they'll say 'hey, maybe this won't be as bad of a scary thing. First day of school! First day of school!'" Volunteers from Hyundai Motor Manufacturing have about 30 projects to work on at Pintlala Elementary -- everything from lawn care, to re-painting playground equipment. "It makes a big difference because everyone likes new stuff, whether it's a new and re-conditioned look, kids are very appreciative," Said Pintlala Elementary P.E. teacher, Demetrius Vaughn. Including first grader, Tyler Vaughn. It might be the same equipment from last year, but giving the playground a make-over means a lot to him. "Because they're helping it be pretty," Said Tyler Vaughn. Now, one of the biggest projects they're working on is a United States map, painted on the concrete portion of the playground. It's a map painted more than 40 years ago that's not only used to play, but also as a teaching tool. And come Monday morning, students and faculty can take pride in brighter version of their map -- and school. "So today it just really overwhelmed me with joy to see so many people come out and take part in it and it's just been very very exciting," Said Hyundai volunteer, Sherry Cargill. Pintlala Elementary is one of nine schools getting a make-over. Others include Southlawn, Crump and Morningview Elementary. Thousands of volunteers are pitching in to give Montgomery County Public Schools a fresher look. |
