Wetumpka Prepares For Casino Traffic
The newly-expanded Wind Creek Casino in Wetumpka opens Tuesday and some people worry that traffic will be a problem.
Some residents can see the casino parking deck entrance from their front doors. One resident says she is concerned for their safety. And now, with final preparations happening for its grand opening on Tuesday, residents in the River Oaks Neighborhood say they are feeling forgotten.
"My main safety concerns is having traffic in the neighborhood that thinks there may be another exit out of here. And that is the only entrance and the only exit coming into the subdivision," says Betty Cawthon, a River Oaks Neighborhood resident.
Some Wetumpka residents say they have already seen a change in traffic patterns since the construction of Wind Creek Casino began, but they say they are not upset about potential traffic as long as people stay safe on the roads.
Rock Smith, a Wetumpka resident, says he is confident in the community's law enforcement, "It might be a little bit more congested, but it's nothing our Wetumpka Police Department cannot control."
The Mayor says police, emergency crews, and traffic control measures are in place for the crowds, but he says there is no way to know what traffic will be like until it actually starts to head towards the city, "The unknown is that we don't know. We don't know what the traffics going to be, but we feel certain that there's going to be a great number of people," says Mayor Jerry Willis.
Wind Creek Casino will officially open its doors at noon on Tuesday, December 17th.
