Winter Weather Forces Cancelled Flights At Montgomery Airport
It's not just the roadways that were closed today. The Montgomery Regional Airport had all but one flight cancelled due to the winter weather.
Even with all the ice, the airport's runway was perfectly fine. But that didn't keep the airlines from changing the schedule.
The Montgomery Regional Airport was a ghost town.
Usually, about 1500 passengers go through the doors every day, but with bad weather comes bad business.
"As you can see, with no commercial air traffic in here, the rental car companies, our vendors, restaurants, there's no customers to serve. And for the safety of their employees they start shutting down early and sending their employees home as well," said Mark Wnuk, Montgomery Airport Authority Executive Assistant.
But even though the runway was clear, there are other reasons the airlines stopped the flights. Montgomery Regional has a low supply of de-icing fluid. It's not normally a need, but Wnuk says that things should start getting back to normal Wednesday.
"We suspect flight activities will begin tomorrow morning. It's going to take maybe half a day to get the planes relocated back to where they should be. Our first four flights in the morning, for example, are the last four flights that landed in here tonight that aren't going to land in here tonight," said Wnuk.
He says it's rare for a complete shutdown like this to happen, but he says it's better to be safe in the wintry conditions.
