From the CBS 8 South Alabama Newsroom-- Despite the controversy over electronic bingo, the city of Florala says it's moving forward with its interest inĀ gaming.

In a press conference this morning, Mayor of Florala, Robert Williamson announced an application for a bingo permit has been submitted to the Sheriff's Department.

Williamson says the Florala Historical Society has an agreement with a major gaming developer in Gulf Shores.

He says the facility could employ up to 1,500 people and return an estimated 10 million dollars annually, across the entire county.

Williamson says he realizes electronic bingo is controversial but he says he wants to see Florala come back to life.

"It is an industry that generates job and money for an area that is economically depressed and we would be taking the same steps regardless of who that industry was to try to bring them in."

Sheriff Meeks says only card bingo is legal in Covington County.

The city attorney says it is up to the developer to decide what to do next, if the permit is not issued.

He says the developer will be announced to the public in the next few days.
