It's a vision that's turned into a reality for folks in Andalusia. And in spite of a fragile economy, the city will not only be welcoming new industry, but also many new jobs.

Governor Robert Bentley, Congresswoman Martha Roby and other leaders were in Andalusia for a major economic announcement earlier today. Andalusia is welcoming a new aerospace industry called DRS Technologies.

The company focuses on maintenance, overhaul and repair for military aircrafts, working on C-130 type airplanes, B-22s, Black Hawks and more. That's everything from simple routine maintenance to heavy structural replacement of parts that have corroded.

"We'll be modifying old aircrafts, updating them, as well as doing what we call heavy maintenance on them," Said Vice President of Aviation and Logistics for DRS, Ed Bowington. "A large aircraft could come in on a periodic basis for major overhaul, so it's a major overhaul facility for aircrafts and helicopters, as well as a modification center for upgrading avionics and electronics."

But what does this mean for job hunters?

"We're talking about jobs that are higher paying hourly wages than most anything in Covington County," Said Andalusia Mayor, Earl Johnson. Extremely high-trained technical people will be working here. Engineering folks, research design people, I mean it's really... when I say a 'game changer', I don't mean that lightly."

"I think it's super. Great jobs for the local people here and we're just grateful a company is willing to come in and support this area," Said Glenn Cook, who has lived in Andalusia for almost 40 years.

DRS Technologies is located in Andalusia's South Alabama Regional Airport, and company officials say they have officially opened for business.

Governor Bentley says the company will bring 40 new high paying jobs this year, and around an additional 40 next year.
