Bridge Replacements Approved In Crenshaw Co.
The total cost for the bridge replacements will cost over 3-million dollars. The county will provide a 20-percent funding match, which will come from local bonds. County officials say they hope to start construction on the new bridges by Spring 2013.
CBS 8 is covering Crenshaw County, where after years of waiting, major work is coming to some heavily traveled local bridges.
This is all part of the state's ongoing initiative to make Alabama roadways safer. They're calling it "ATRIP," which is the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program. And many of those improvements are coming to bridges in Crenshaw County. Six new bridges will be completely replaced along county roads 50 and 59. County Engineer, Benjie Sanders, says they've been anticipating this for years. These bridges were built in the mid to late forties and have a timber sub-structure," Said Sanders. "So, they deteriorated significantly, as well as when they were built in the forites. They weren't designed to carry the weight and types of traffic that now are on the roads today." Sanders also says it's important for drivers to be aware because they are major county roads that receive a high amount of traffic. Most of the bridges hold eight tons or less, bringing an inconvenience to school buses, 18-wheelers, and log trucks... which for years, have had to take other longer routes. But soon, that will change. And businesses along those roads couldn't be happier. "We are excited about the grant money Crenshaw county is going to be receiving to repair the bridges. It's going to be some much convenience for us for our trucks to enter without having to make a long detour, and also on our out-bound frame," Said Browder Veneers employee, George Browder. "Our trucks cover this road on their delivery routes and come into Petrey," Said WO Petrey Wholesales employee, Jim Jackson. "And we're delighted to have this help, from outside federal or state money coming into the county to add to our resources to repairs these bridges that are dangerous." |
