City Council: 11 Homes Have 30 Days to Clean Up
By Catalina Trivino

In Opp- - the city council has decided to demolish unoccupied homes that have become eyesores...

This means 11 homes in the city have 30 days to clean up.

The city has abated those properties. If these homeowners do not fix the problem, either the city will tear down the property or they will clean it up themselves -- but not for free. That means the cost will go onto their property taxes.

According to the 2010 US Census, about 13 percent of homes in Opp are vacant -- that's 663 properties. The percentage is one of the reasons Mayor John Bartholomew says they're demolishing these eyesores...

"This is one of the plans that we've programmed for the city because you've got to bring investors in. The first thing they're going to do is drive around your city and they're going to look at your city, [to see] whether you have these plans in progress," Said Bartholomew. "If you don't, and they see these dilapidated homes, they don't want to come into our city."

Bartholomew says they're also tackling these homes because of health hazards.
