Cornelius Butler Found Not Guilty In Attempted Murder Trial
Cornelius Butler was found not guilty for the attempted murder of James Smith today in Lowndes County.
Charges stemmed from a random drive by shooting in December of 2010, when Butler was driving a car with a passenger inside who opened fire on Smith's van. Prosecutor's argued Butler and his passenger left Smith to die.
The Defense Attorney for Butler, Susan James, says Butler was afraid for his life after shots were fired from the car he was driving, and she believes the jury followed the law and found reasonable doubt, "Given the testimony of the co-defendant who said he didn't plan it, he wasn't a participant, I think that probably carried a lot of weight with the jury."
James Smith still has one of the bullets lodged in his liver. He did not stay in the courtroom to hear the verdict, but says he is just ready to move on with his life.
