Covington Sportsman's Expo Kicks Off The Weekend
An outdoorsman's paradise is taking place in Andalusia this weekend... a mini Buckmasters, they're calling it: It's the first ever Covington Sportsman's Expo. Hundreds of people were there, some as far as Wisconsin to experience a taste of the south.
City officials say they expect the expo to bring about 8-thousand people to Andalusia. For more information on the expo and all of its events, you can visit www.covingtonsportsmansexpo.com. The expo kicked off today, showcasing some of the latest outdoor equipment. "Like, I like going and seeing the deers, and the knives, and the guns and they're like having shows on like deer calls and stuff," Said 14-year-old, Tori Cleghorn. More than one hundred vendors are selling everything from hunting tools to camouflauge gear. There will also be plenty of food and concerts, even a Turkey Calling Contest. And you might hope to sound like five-time world champ, Preston Pittman, as he tells CBS 8 how long he has been turkey calling. "Well, on November the 28 of 1953, when I popped out of my momma and that baby doctor spanked me on the hiney... they say what I actually did was something the the effect of {sound of turkey call}. And I've been doing it ever since," Said Pittman. And dont' forget the kids. There's a fun zone, including a paint ball shooting gallery and lots of water slides to beat the heat. Event Coordinator, Harold Barnes, says his goal is to put people back in the outdoors as much as possible -- especially the kids. "There's too many kids out there playing video games and getting in trouble and if they'll just get in the outdoors, whether they love to hunt, fish, go canoeing, camping... that's what we're about. We want to get these kids involved," Said Barnes, who has dreamed of putting this event together for over 10 years. The expo is located in Andalusia's Kiwani's Fairgrounds and will be taking place all weekend long. Events will begin at 9 a.m each morning. Tickets are $10 a day and children 10 and under are free. |
