UPDATE:Dale Co. Sheriff: "No Reason to Believe the Child has Been Harmed"
Negotiations Underway in Midland City Hostage Situation Involving a 6-year old boy
It's a very delicate situation and authorities in Dale County have been tight lipped about the hostage situation involving a 6-year old kindergartener.
"There is no reason to believe the child has been harmed," Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson said in a press conference shortly before 5:00 p.m. Wednesday.
The 6-year-old boy was seized from a school bus at gunpoint Tuesday afternoon on his way home from elementary school. Before the gunman took the boy down to a bunker on his property, the gunman shot the school bus driver, 66-year-old Charles Poland Junior in front of a bus full of children. Poland died later from his injuries.
Authorities are not releasing the gunman's name, but neighbors tell CBS-8 the man involved is 65-year old Jimmy Lee Dykes.
CBS-8 is told abducted child has a medical condition, and investigators have communicated with the suspect through a length of PVC pipe that extends out of the bunker.
Negotiators also sent down prescription medicine for the child as well as coloring books and crayons.
Sheriff Olson is asking everyone "to pray" for this young boy's safety, and pray the situation is quickly resolved.
