Federal officials have announced they'll be monitoring a municipal election in Evergreen to ensure voting practices are in compliance with the Voting Rights Act.
Department of Justice officials say observers will be dispatched to monitor polling places in the south Alabama city. They'll be watching and recording activities during the voting period and officials say attorneys from the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division will keep in touch with local elections officials during the vote.
In April, a judge postponed the city's election amid allegations that the city's five council districts are split to dilute the voting power of black residents. The city is about 62 percent black.
