Former Alabama Football Player Murdered in Greenville

Greenville police are investigating an overnight murder of a former Alabama football player. Authorities tell us 22 year old Eric Simmons is being held at the Butler County Jail on murder charges.

Investigators say Simmons shot former Alabama football player, Ozell Powell, twice in the chest at Creek Stone apartments on Chalet drive in Greenville. Powell was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators say they believe robbery was the motive. They also say more arrests could be made in this case. This is the second homicide of the year in Greenville.
 
Powell played at Alabama from 1993 through 1996. He started 25 games on the defensive line.
 
Powell was on the practice team for the NFL's Washington Redskins in 1997 and 1998 and he signed with the Atlanta Falcons as a free agent in 2000.
