CBS 8 News is covering Opp where students took the pavement, all in the name of research Thursday morning.
It was the very first "Walk for a Cure" event and hundreds of Opp Elementary students spent their PE hour supporting juvenile diabetes.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation teamed up with local mom, Beth Lewis, whose son suffers from the disease.
The school raised over $7,000 in the last two weeks alone. Lewis says the turnout is overwhelming.
"It means more than you can imagine. To have this many people turn out, I get choked up. It's great. You couldn't ask for a better turn out, especially in the first year," says Lewis.
Lewis says they hope to continue the event for years to come.
