Alabama Department of Transportation officials say an 18-wheeler tanker driving south on Alabama Highway 55 crashed into a train. It happened around noon near County Road 107, just south of Red Level. They say the driver did not stop in time, and he maneuvered his truck to go parallel with the train. The train crew was not hurt, although the truck driver received minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.
"The tanker was returning to his terminal and he was empty and that was good," Said ALDOT's District 3 Manager, Larry Turman. "That was fortunate that he was not carrying any type of raw material, which is what they haul. A chemical."
Traffic was delayed for about 5 hours this afternoon. The road is now open to the public.
There's been multiple big truck accidents this week... including today in Covington County.
