CBS 8 and ABC Montgomery are Taking Action Against Crime and with thousands of students leaving for spring break, officers warn that creates many crimes of opportunity.

Troy Police say that in one year there's been 593 thefts. Many criminals will hit during university breaks. On top of the usual lock your doors, and close your blinds, officers say you should take a few minutes before leaving to take pictures of serial numbers and valuables. That way they can track enter stolen items into a database.

Lt. Bryan Weed, Troy Police Department said, "You can make self marks on there if it doesn't have a serial number. Just have some type of unique identification that we can put in the computer. That if somebody else in another department, in another part of the country comes across that they can identify it to this particular crime or this particular owner."

The Troy Police Department says it's not only up to those leaving town to prevent crime, if you notice anything suspicious don't hesitate to call 911.
