Bullock County High School Unveils New Gym
After three years of construction delays, Bullock County High School will play its first basketball game in its new gym Friday.
School officials say the new facility is state-of-the art, but it almost didn't happen, after the contractor ran out of money and stopped the project, putting the opening a year and a half behind schedule.
"I honestly, for a long time, didn't think we would ever be able to get in here," said Athletic Director Courtney Pritchett.
On Friday, workers were putting the finishing touches on the $2.5 million gym and getting ready for the first game. Last February, contractors ran out of money, leaving the gym almost finished. but not able to pass inspection, so the school hired a new contractor in May to finish the work.
"We did receive our certificate of approval to allow the community to come in and we're going to celebrate this occasion," said Principal Undrea Johnson.
"Just to be in it, feels very great, the goals are nice, the bleachers are nice, the seats are nice," said Charles Walker, who plays for the boys' basketball team.
"I love it, I love the gym, I'm glad to be in it than my old gym," said Jalinthya Cannon, who plays for the girls' team.
School officials say they'll also use the new gym for special events and presentations, including graduations.
