City Unveils New Troy Nutrition Center

Troy city leaders are unveiling a new building, specially equipped to meet the needs of seniors citizens in the area. They say they hope the new facility will become a focal point for the senior community.

Seniors say the new Troy Nutrition Center isn't just a building. It's also a chance to get together and enjoy life.

For people in Troy, it's a dream four years in the making. "I feel wonderful. We have been working on this project ever since 2008, and it finally, we finally moved in. My seniors are happy, and I'm happy too," said Hassie Green, Troy Nutrition Center Director.

The City officially opened the $500,000 Troy Nutrition Center Wednesday, complete with a large common room and game center. Dozens of area seniors came to the grand opening to take part in everything from Christmas carols to a game of Wii.

"It's just a welcoming place to come, meet friends, and be with people, you know, it's just great," said William Fortune.

"I think it's going to be a lot better. We've got a lot more things going on, and it's gonna get bigger and better," said Charles Flynn.

City leaders say the center is a big investment in the community's future. "We owe a debt of gratitude to the folks who have come before us, we need to make sure they have a place that they can come, be safe, enjoy one another, and it's also a draw, you know, as the population ages. The more you have for seniors to do, the more traffic your community is to the other people," said Jason Reeves, Troy's mayor.

Seniors say that's already starting to happen. "Word will get out to people that's out there in their apartments or in their houses, don't have anything to do, that's senior citizens, they'll come out now. There's something for everybody now," said Sandy Fortune.

The Troy Nutrition Center will offer hot meals for seniors Monday through Friday, along with other outreach and community programs. It's open five days a week for Troy residents ages 60 and up.
