Meeksville Independence Day Celebration Goes On Despite Rain
By Brittany Bivins

The town held its annual 4th of July barbecue at the Meeksville Volunteer Fire Department. About 100 people came to buy plates of chicken, ribs and sandwiches, following the annual parade.

All of the money raised today will go to fund the Meeksville Volunteer Fire Department. The annual parade is a 15-year tradition for Pike County and brings people from all across the area, decked out in their most patriotic gear.

Organizers say they had no plans to cancel the Independence Day events as long as it was safe for visitors.

"It was wonderful. I mean, people called, people come by, they stopped by, to see if we were going to go ahead and definitely we were. Our chief, assistant chief, safety directors, just our whole department, just asked for safety first," said Mona Jackson, who organized the event.

This is the second year for the parade in Meeksville. Before that, it was held in nearby China Grove. This year's parade and barbecue were dedicated to the memories of Diane LaFountaine and her husband, Hank, long-time supporters of the parade in China Grove.
