From the CBS 8 Troy Newsroom-- The new runway at the Troy Municipal Airport is open and now making it possible for larger planes to take off and land.

City leaders say the new runway is creating more opportunities for Troy and Pike County, and say the best part is it's become an industry magnet.

The new runway at Troy's airport is up and running and already creating buzz. Economic Development President Marsha Gaylord says the 6,500 foot long runway has become an important recruiting tool for the county.

"The runway will allow private corporate jets to be able to carry more fuel, so it will just open up things for some of our local businesses and businesses coming in," she says.

Mayor Jimmy Lunsford say while it's unlikely the expansion will attract commercial flights, it's opening doors to new possibilities.

"It's a good possibility. We have some inquiries about the day jet services, where they come in and do a charter service in and out," he says.

Lunsford says a few finishing touches are needed like installing the instrument landing system, which allows planes to take off or land in bad weather and says that won't happen until this summer. He also says more fencing is needed.

"I rode out there one Monday morning. Guys on the four-wheelers have come into the airport on the back side and were tearing up the banks, so instead of having the fence around the airport runway itself, we had to go around the entire property," he says.

Lunsford says the project totals around $5 million, but the Federal Aviation Administration has funded 95 percent of that. He also says they'll be funding most of the additional fencing.

Troy University's athletic department says if it works out, they plan on using the new airport and say opposing teams may take advantage of it too.
