Pike Co. Prepares for Fourth of JulyPike County is preparing for a jam-packed Fourth of July Holiday full of fireworks and family fun. Organizers say this year's Fourth of July festivities will be bigger and better than ever before. The day will start with parades and end with a fireworks extravaganza. "Everybody loves the oohs and awes of fireworks," says Dan Smith, organizer of Troy's fireworks show. "The technicians mix in a lot of the traditional shells, as well as a lot of new shells that people have not seen before." A $16,000 fireworks spectacular that will light up the sky in Troy. The city's annual fireworks show will start Wednesday night at 8:45 at Troy University's football stadium. Smith says folks can celebrate as early as they'd like. He says tailgates, picnics and barbecues are welcome. But the holiday fun starts well before the show. Years past, the Pike County community of China Grove held the Fourth of July Parade. "There's been some conflict up there, so they've decided to pass the torch to Meeskville," says organizer Jennifer Register. The parade kicks off Wednesday morning at 10. It ends at the Harmony Community Park on County Road 7714 where barbecue, live music and ice cream will be served. "It's a hometown, Mayberry kind of parade. It's adorable," she says. Those new to the area can't wait for the entertainment. Ethan Walker is hoping for an experience of a lifetime. "I will probably go to one of the parades. Definitely see the fireworks," Walker says. "I'm from Florida. They're pretty patriotic, but like Alabama like blows Florida out of the water." The city of Brundidge is also hosting an annual Fourth of July Parade.100 entries are expected. The parade will be held this Saturday on Main Street starting at eight in the morning.
