The Pike County fair is officially underway at the Pike County Fairgrounds in Troy.  The festivities kicked off on Tuesday at 6 P.M., with rides, games and plenty of fair food.

The annual fair is sponsored by the Shrine Club of Troy, which donates a large chunk of the proceeds to Shriners Hospitals, which help treat sick and injured children across the county, regardless of the family's ability to pay.

Freddie Turner, who serves as treasurer, says it's the biggest fundraiser of the year, and it makes a huge difference to the bottom line. "When you see a Shriner, you know we're here to help the children, and that's the only reason we're help, is just the fellowship. If it weren't for the children, he wouldn't be here to start with," he said.

Shrine Club President Homer Homann says he expects the fair to be successful because of its value. "It's the best, cleanest family fun you can have," he said. He says he expects this year's fair to draw a better-than average crowd, because there's already been a bigger interest in the arts and crafts and jellies and jams submission. They're up 20 percent over last year.

People we talked to say they're ready for the fun and games. Just after the gates opened, Troy second-grader Marshall Connelly was headed for the gate with his newest prize, a goldfish in a bag."I was trying to win a goldfish, and when I tried that thing, I won, the first, the first thing, the first time," he said.

Tickets are $6 for adults 12 and up, and $4 for children ages 6-11. Kids 5 and under are admitted free. The fair runs through Saturday, October 20.
