Rural Post Offices Cut Hours to Stay Open
By Jessica Gertler

From the CBS 8 Troy Newsroom--  More than 200 post offices in Alabama may be cutting back on hours in order to be able to keep rural locations open for business.

The U.S. Postal Service is proposing a new strategy that will keep the country's smallest locations open for business, while saving them half of billion dollars each year.

There's 13,000 post offices in the country that fall under this new plan, and they were chosen, because they have the least amount of retail business and the lowest earned work load.

Two locations in Pike County are being considered.

Tucked away in the Pike County towns of Banks and Goshen you'll find what residents call a town symbol.

"It seems like you aren't really a town anymore if you lose your post office," says Banks resident Mac Seay.

So it's no wonder why some folks are backing the new U.S. Postal plan that may keep rural locations open by shaving back retail hours. If implemented, Banks would operate six hours a day, and Goshen would stay open for four hours.

"I don't think it will affect anybody closing two hours early or opening late," says Seay.

Postal Service officials say they will be holding town hall meetings and sending out surveys asking if a Village Post Office at an already-established business would better suit the area.

Employees at both locations didn't want to go on camera, but they say they haven't heard if this new plan will affect their job.

The postal service is guaranteeing the impact on employees is minimal, and folks like James Johnson hope they keep that promise.

"They're just like we are. They wouldn't be here if they didn't need the job," he says.

This new plan won't take effect until after Labor Day at the earliest, and this is only temporary. The U.S. Postal Service will reassess everything in September 2014.

For locations already slated to close last July, they could remain open depending on what the community wants.
