Troy Man Behind Bars After Leading Police on 160 Mile Chase

A high speed chase spanning three counties ends tonight with a Pike County man behind bars.

Troy Police say dozens of officers were involved in a high speed chase lasting more than an hour, covering 160 miles with speeds exceeding 100 m.p.h.

Thirty-year-old Daniel Carswell and his passenger, whose name police aren't releasing, were taken to the Troy City Jail after police say Carswell led them on a high speed chase.

Sgt. Benny Scarbrough says the pursuit started in Troy after police tried pulling Carswell over. He says Carswell was wanted for stealing property from a resident on Kelly Road.

The resident tells CBS 8 it was her tractor that was stolen.

"At that time, he failed to stop and attempted to allude police," Scarbrough says.

He says Carswell took police on a 160 mile ride through Pike, Bullock, and Montgomery Counties.

Ending with what Scarbrough says may have been Friday the 13th luck.

"He had been going a long time. For a lot of miles, and I don't know how much gas was in his vehicle, but I know one of ours gave out of gas," he says.

Scarbough say Carswell will face theft first degree, alluding police and reckless driving charges, while his passenger, as of now, will walk free.

"I'm sure there will be a number of other charges that will come a long," he says.

Sheriff Russell Thomas says several agencies including his were involved, and he says together they worked as a team.

"We all communicated and worked together very well, and the end result is he is in custody, and he's off the streets," Thomas says.

Police say no one was injured, but one car did receive damage.

Police say Carswell and his passenger may face other charges in Montgomery and Bullock Counties.
