Troy Univ. Students Search for Housing

With school starting next month, Troy University students are scrambling to find a place to live.

Most students CBS 8 News spoke with say they're searching for an apartment or rental home. But for some, it's been a tough process.

The hunt has begun.

"It's a little difficult, you know," says Reneasha Gardner, who is searching for an apartment. "Coming in as a freshman they want you to stay on campus, so that leaves upper-classmen kind of left to find their own place to live."

Troy University students are weighing their options, trying to find the perfect set up this school year.

"You do look for security, and the amenities: pools, basketball courts, places to work out," says Josef Lauderdale, who is looking for a rental property.

Adam Drinkwater, with Landmark Realty, says he's been swamped helping students find the ideal living situation.

"We have people coming in the office probably every hour," says Drinkwater. "We have a lot of students come in especially this time of year, especially freshmen that aren't staying on campus."

And while a majority of freshmen have chosen to live on-campus, space is limited until the new student housing facility is up and running.

"I was going to be 241 on the waiting list for dorms, and I can't not have a place to live," says freshman Althea Hoffer. "The person in the admissions gave me pamphlets."

Students say they're not giving up hope and are sure they'll find a place by August.

Just at Landmark Realty alone, employees say they have more than 300 units that they rent out. They say most will be filled by the end of this month.
