Troy Welcomes a Thousand Athletes to Participate in State Special Olympics Games

,000 Special Olympics athletes will compete in the state games this weekend at Troy University., where athletes compete in 12 events from running to cycling. The games kicked off Friday night with a torch run by law enforcement officers and opening ceremonies at Troy University's Trojan Arena.


had a lot of fun down there and meeting people I never met before," said Tonya Pitch, who participated in the games.


We've met some great people down here while we've been down here and my daughter and son made some great friends while they're down here competing against them," said Mark Olive, whose son and daughter compete in the games.

The games end on Sunday with an awards ceremony.

Those who qualify in their events are eligible for the national Special Olympics games in 2014.

It's the seventh time Troy has hosted the games
