From the West Alabama Newsroom--  A Perry County man is behind bars -- charged with the murder of his girlfriend.

Sheriff James Hood says 21 year old Eric King Junior was arrested for shooting and killing 25 year old Jonika Smith.

Hood says the shooting happened late Sunday afternoon at a house on the 800 block of Pisgah Church Road in the Sprott community. He says King shot Smith then drove her to the hospital in Selma -- where she was pronounced dead.

"After the incident he carried her to the hospital and then you know he was picked up at the hospital and brought back to Perry County and arrested and we have him in custody now," said Hood.

He said the case remains under investigation by the Perry County Sheriff's Office and the A-B-I.

King is being held in the Perry County Jail on a one-million dollar bond.
