From the West Alabama Newsroom-- Baby deliveries could soon be a thing of the past at the only hospital in the city of Demopolis.
The hospital board has voted to shut down the Labor and Delivery department at Bryan Whitfield Memorial Hospital. Its the second time the board has voted to close the department. The board did the same thing back in 2011 -- but an agreement was reached to keep it open. Dr. Maurice Fitz-Gerald says community leaders are working to try and make THAT happen for a second time as well.
"We have to serve our community. There's no sense in having a hospital if it doesn't take care of the medical needs of the people in the area and so that's why its so important for us to keep our labor and delivery," said Fitz-Gerald.
Demopolis Mayor Mike Grayson says the city takes pride in having a full service hospital -- and will do all it can to keep it that way.
