Fraternity Mentors At-Risk Youth in SelmaA group of men in Selma is trying to make a difference in the lives of at-risk boys. Members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity are trying to fill in the gap in the lives of boys who are being raised by single mothers in Selma. Fraternity members have been serving as mentors for 6th grade boys each year. They hang out with the boys on some Saturday mornings, play sports with them, and tutor the boys in math, science and reading. "They are trying to help us with our ARMT scores and for the people who don't have their dads," said sixth grader Corbin Carter. Omega member Ivery Williams says the fraternity decided to get involved with a mentoring program because statistics show that boys who grow up without a father-- or a positive male role model in their lives-- are more likely to drop out of high school-- get involved in crime-- and go to prison. "We saw a need." he said. |
