Group Working to Save Historic Building in Selma
From the CBS 8 West Alabama Newsroom-- A historic building in downtown Selma will soon be getting a needed face-lift thanks to the mission of a local non-profit group.
The Selma-Dallas County Historic Preservation Society is planning to start work stabilizing the old YMCA building in about 4 to 6 weeks. The 127 year old building has fallen into disrepair over the past few years and it will also get a new façade. The fee for a building permit for the project has been waived by the city council. "And in the light of what they've already spent on this building they have already spent. It's the least the city could've done because it's going to be a beautiful spot on Broad Street and we couldn't stand to lose it so it'll be good for everybody," said Councilman Greg Bjelke. The Historic Society bought the building earlier this year for about $40,000 dollars to try and save it from collapsing or being torn down. |
