A historic hotel in Selma may soon be forced to shut its doors for good.
The City of Selma has spent $25,000 since August 1st, to keep the St. James Hotel running. The company managing the hotel, Gourmet Services, stopped running the hotel on August 1st.
Mayor George Evans says that the city, which is now running the day to day operations of the hotel, is attempting to make the hotel sustainable until it can be sold. He reports calls from two companies interested in running the hotel.
City Council member Susan Keith says repairs are needed before the city can lease or sell the hotel.
The hotel sits in the heart of downtown and is near the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
