From the West Alabama Newsroom--  There have been so many cases of minor children allegedly being sexually abused by adults in the news in Dallas County over the past few weeks -- that it has some people wondering if child sex abuse is on the rise in the area?

Authorities say there has been an increase in the number of child sex abuse cases reported -- and arrests -- but not necessarily in the number of cases.

They say more people are coming forward because of increased public awareness about the problem.

"People are not as fearful about going to law enforcement about that situation," said Dallas Co. District Attorney Michael Jackson. "Kids are not as fearful now about going to their parents and telling them what someone may have done to them."

Authorities say there are about 230 registered sex offenders living in Dallas County. They say the average age of a sex abuse victim is nine years old.
