By George McDonald

People in Selma celebrated the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday with a call for unity -- and a commitment to service.

Hundreds of people attended the annual Links, Incorporated King Day Unity Breakfast Monday morning. Dallas County Probate Judge Kim Ballard was the keynote speaker.

Organizers say the event brings people together and honors the life and legacy of Doctor King.

"He was about peace, and loving your fellow man, and prosperity, and making the world a better place," said Links member Frances Bumbrey.

King Day festivities in Selma also included a march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge -- and various community service project.
